Luggage

luggageLuggage is one of those things that you need to really think about or you will buy the wrong size, wrong durability, and will pay extra money for overweight when departing from the airport for your international internship or study abroad program.

You have to think about the things you want to take with you before you decide what kind of luggage you want to buy for your trip. It is also important for you to check all of the airline requirements before you buy luggage to be able to meet them. Duration of your international internship is another determinant that will help you choose the right luggage set. Whether you are interning abroad for the next month or three months – it all matters! You might worry whether you are bringing enough things for your stay or whether you have any warm clothing, etc. But if you think about it, as long as you have laundry and all of the basic necessities available to you, the size or content of your luggage shouldn’t be any different. Think about it this way – if you were able to live one month, wouldn’t you be able to go another month and then another one? No doubt, you will be fine thus worrying about it shouldn’t be a big concern at all. You shouldn’t be concerned about clothing that much either – you can always buy it when you arrive to your international internship destination. Whether it is in Italy, or Nepal, you will usually find what you need at local markets, stores, or bazaars.

If you can use your old luggage, or borrow it from your friends or family, then don’t waste any money buying new luggage, especially if your international internship is only a couple of months.

Key things to consider when choosing luggage:

#1. Check your luggage weight.
Weight of your luggage can usually be a problem. Most of the older luggage models are heavy and bulky. Newer luggage is usually compact, light, and easy to use. Some of the old luggage doesn’t have wheels and pull-up handles which makes it miserable to move around with it. Check out your options before you spend another $200 towards your international internship.

#2. Check your luggage condition.
Look at the condition of your luggage. Are there any wholes? Broken zippers? Broken wheels? Is there anything else wrong with it? Any repairs needed to be done are usually costly if it is something that you can’t fix yourself. It is also risky to take broken luggage with you. Imagine a situation when your luggage just falls apart in the middle of a crowded airport! That’s a pretty embarrassing and stressful situation. What would you do in such situation? Just think how much headache it might bring you! A little bit of planning will eliminate such problems.

#3. How useful is your luggage?
What is the utility of your luggage? Is it useful? What are your uses for it? Are there enough features? Are there too many features? Do you need to upgrade or maybe to downgrade?

#4. What are your needs?
Think about what you need your luggage for. Are you planning to travel around the country you are going to? Do you need it to be compact and easy to bring with you everywhere? Or are you just going to put in your room/apartment and let it sit there until you leave back home? Whatever your needs are, make sure you bring appropriate luggage with you.

#5. Packing
Packing can be very stressful. Depending on the country you are visiting, pack accordingly. Avoid bringing expensive and valuable things with you such as jewelry, expensive clothing that will mark you differently, etc. Don’t try take everything with you! Pack lightly so that you can move freely and will have a free hand when needed.

#6. Choose your luggage.
Once you are done figuring out what you need your luggage for, it is time to finally purchase your luggage set and be one step closer to start your international internship! There is a variety of different brands you can choose from. It all depends on your tastes and needs to say which brand will fit you most. Check out Ebags, Amazon, or Zappos websites to look for your luggage.
